Dean Ambrose, the Lunatic Fringe, described by Stone Cold Steve Austin as “resting on his laurels”, delivered a scathing promo with John Cena last week on SmackDown Live. I love Dean’s character, the crazy guy who shoots from the hip and delivers snarky promos. I was in attendance at the “Money in the Bank” pay-per-view and witnessed his inevitable victory in becoming the MITB winner and subsequent World Champion in the same night.
Dean became a fighting champion and his matches with Seth Rollins were great. Winning the triple-threat match at “Battleground” solidified his position as “the dude” on top of the WWE world. During his title reign, Dean portrayed more of a comic-plucky relief character, which I found entertaining. However, his critics viewed this as a man who did not take his character to the next level. His match against AJ styles at “Backlash”, allowed Dean to put AJ over and give the Lunatic Fringe a reset.
During last week’s episode of SmackDown Live, John Cena described his as lazy and resting on his laurels. This moment pushed Dean into performing one of his best promos since the brand-split. I hope that he goes back to the unpredictable character that seizes the moment at every opportunity in order to make a statement.
In opinion, it will be awhile before Dean regains the World Title. Like Roman Reigns, this is the time to reset himself and rebuild his character as “the dude” who wants to be on top of the world.
